Hugh Culber is played once again by Wilson Cruz.
Paul Stamets, the astromycologist is played by Anthony Rapp, and his on-screen husband physician, Dr. Doug Jones is back as the Kelpien Captain Saru who senses impending death and is hyper-sensitive to danger. Sonequa Martin-Green stars again as the reckless but brilliant Captain Michael Burnham. Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery is the last in the series. Olatunde Osunsanmi continues to serve as executive producer and producing director for the show. Frakes has directed episodes of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Picard, and Strange New Worlds. Jonathan Frakes, known for portraying Commander William Riker in a previous Star Trek iteration, is set to direct episodes in Season 5. Set 900 years after the original series, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 features Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise serving as the showrunners.
